“Just Go Do It!” by Kari Crowell, Gold’s Gym Member

Has the recent cool weather had you guessing when summer is coming? It has me, but on Sunday I found myself outdoors actually glad it was a bit overcast. I’ve been wanting to get out and take in some training advice given by a friend, “go hiking, it’ll help build your cardio.” So, I invited another friend to help tackle Sage Hill trail. (I’m embarrassed to admit, until just recently I didn’t know this hike even existed! What rock have I been living under?)

“Eight Weeks Till Race Day…” by Kari Crowell, Gold’s Gym Member

I’d say recently I’ve discovered just how goal oriented I am. Before the Challenge, it was easy to say or think that I’d like to lose weight, eat healthy or get in better shape. The problem was, not being able see the path to my motivation to reach those goals. I learned during the 12 weeks how to set smaller goals to bounce forward to the next goal, till I got where I wanted to be. It’s hard to imagine myself back in October when we joined Gold’s, I’m simply not the same person, it feel’s fantastic knowing I’m taking better care of myself for my future years and goals.

“Kickboxing” by Melissa Schwab, Gold’s Gym Challenge Participant

I love Tuesday nights, because it’s my kickboxing class. I was surprised to discover how much I enjoy kickboxing. Remember I’m the girl with the two left feet in class usually, but somehow I manage to survive and have fun in this class. I guess I can kick and punch just not dance or step on boxes. There is something really empowering about doing all the punching and kicking and blocking. It’s a great way to rid yourself of any aggression. Mary does a wonderful job of explaining the moves and makes it fun and easy. But by “easy” I don’t mean that you won’t feel it, you will definitely be sweating and burning lots of calories. It is an awesome full body cardio workout! The only problem is that the class is really full. Last week, I “literally” got kicked in the rear. So I’m holding out hope that more classes will pop-up on the schedule. (I loved Angela’s Wednesday night Turbo Kick too….please come back Angela!) If you’re like me and have a hard time finding your “rhythm” with your two left feet, maybe give kickboxing a try. Come join me in kicking and punching calories away!

“Making Calories Count” by Melissa Schwab, Gold’s Gym Challenge Participant

So I survived Valentine’s Day without a single piece of candy.  YAY! I can’t say I wasn’t tempted though. (I even had a chocolate protein shake at the gym to try and curb some of the chocolate craving.)  I looked at how many calories were in a small piece of chocolate candy and was amazed that it was 45 calories for a quarter size piece of candy. Ugh!  My calories are too precious to me right now to waste them on candy.  Wouldn’t it be great if calories came off as easily as they came on?  You know…I just ate a cookie and BOOM a hundred calories would be gone.  I wish! Instead what takes you mere minutes to eat, can take hours to burn.  A nibble here and nibble there adds up quickly.  I was reading Aron’s post on Calories vs. Cardio, http://www.goldsgym.com/healthy/newsletter/2009-10/calories-vs-cardio.php?ref_id=2374&ref_t=Z&originid=54711880,  and about died. It’s amazing to look at things in that perspective. So instead of grabbing that candy, I think I’ll head back to the treadmill…

“Spin” by Melissa Schwab, Gold’s Gym Challenge Particpant

I love spin class! I remember the first time someone suggested that I try a spin class. I laughed and said that I HATED to ride bikes. My husband and I were just laughing about a time when we were first married and we decided to go for a bike ride. Let’s just say it ended with me on the side of the road with my bike and telling my husband to go back and get the truck because I wasn’t going any further. I hadn’t been on a bike since then. So I reluctantly went to the spin class and now it’s one of my favorites. There is a great energy to the class and it makes the time go so quickly. It’s all about the music, finding the beat of the music, sprinting, and climbing mountains. The instructor talks you through the workout giving gear changes and RPM goals. There was a new release last week that definitely gets your heart pumpin’. My only problem with the class is when I’m too late to get a bike. I happen to attend a lot of Bethany’s classes. She’s a rockstar. She talks you through the entire workout, and somehow still remembers everyone’s name. So come join me for a spin! Be sure to save me a bike….

The Art of Expressing the Human Body

Much more than just another book about Bruce Lee, The Art of Expressing the Human Body is full of exercise information. Aside from being a world-renowned ‘movie star’ and martial artist, Bruce Lee was first and foremost an athlete. One look at his physique in the movie Enter the Dragon and I’m sure you’ll agree that he knew a little bit about working out and what it means to be LEAN.
