“Next Journey” by Jessica Tyrrell, Gold’s Gym 2010 Most Inspirational Challenge Winner

While most of you are tucked in bed and sound asleep this coming Saturday morning I will be wide awake and stretching for my next run.  Once 7am strikes the clock and the gun is fired I will take off on my next journey. This is my second half-marathon that I will be participating in this year and I am so excited! I will be running from Tukwila,WA to Seattle,WA. You run along the water, freeway and even into downtown Seattle. I can only imagine how beautiful it’s going to be. I want to be very honest when I write these blogs so; I want to share a little secret with all of you and especially the ones who tell me they can’t run.

“My Trainer” by Jessica Tyrrell, 2010 “Most Inspirational” Gold’s Gym Challenge Winner

This weekend I was out and about when I got stopped by someone to chat and during our conversation they asked me why I had a trainer when it seemed like I had enough motivation to keep going on my own.  This lead me to my blog topic for the week and I think this is honestly one of the easiest things for me to talk about because I would recommend to everyone that they have a trainer.  First of all I do understand that not everyone can afford to have a trainer. However, think of all the money you blow going out to eat all the time, going to happy hour, buying a coffee everyday or even stopping at the store to grab something.  All these things add up and I’m not even going to mention all the calories you’re wracking up! This is how I compare the cost, for me, I think I’m actually saving money!

“What’s Your Next Challenge?” by Kari Crowell, Gold’s Gym Member

Q. “When was the last time you did something for the first time?”

For Me- obviously training for this race. It’s been a challenge for sure, pushing me farther than I’ve ever gone before. It’s already shown how hard it is to stay focused, but, with so many rewards thus far, how could I possibly stop now? Besides, I’m just getting started. The biggest reward was last week, watching our daughter learn how to ride her bike with her dad. Her motivation was “I want to ride like the other kids and with you guys! AND these training wheels are noisy!” She was so determined to ride on her own that night and she did! We were of course so happy and proud of her.

“Blahs” by Melissa Schwab, Gold’s Gym Challenge Participant

So we’re halfway through the challenge. I feel like I have the “mid-challenge blahs”. The newness and excitement of doing the challenge have started to wear off. I’m getting too comfortable with my workouts and a little lazy with my food. The scale is still moving in the right direction, but never as quickly and drastically as I want it to be. I’ve had a bit of a bad/frustrated attitude this week. I got a birthday email from the gym yesterday with a “pass” for one day worth of couch sitting, extra snoozing, movie watching, ice cream cake eating ditching the gym day. It was very cute and I sooo badly wanted to cash it in. But I’m doing this darn challenge and I need to stay committed to it. Ugh! I realized that this is the part of the challenge where perseverance kicks in. It’s time to regroup. Change up the workouts, get some new music on my iPod and get disciplined with my eating habits. It’s a new day, and there are new ways. The March class schedule will be out any day, maybe there’s a new class to try. We’ve been blessed with some beautiful weather so maybe it’s time to workout outside. I need to commit to a positive attitude… “I’m half way there and look how far I’ve come”. OK, even writing it I’m feeling a little better, but I’m still saving that “pass” for April…

“Pushing Through” by Melissa Schwab, Gold’s Gym Challenge Participant

Just three weeks into the challenge and already the workouts are becoming daunting. Nine weeks to go! Ugh! It feels like some days are just easier than others for getting a workout in. Today is a gloomy, overcast day (my little girl is home sick) and it makes me want to snuggle back into bed and NOT go to the gym. I feel like I have to pull out all the stops today. I tend to play tricks with myself to get through a workout. I upload new songs on my iPod, find a favorite show to watch, or cover the display so I’m not watching the minutes slowly pass. I would love to hear some feedback about what gets YOU through a workout. Everyday, or sometimes every minute, I feel like I’m faced with a decision that the will determine my success in this challenge. What am I going to eat and how much, when can I workout and how hard will I push myself during the workout. So I’m just trying to remind myself why I’m doing the challenge, and make every moment count.

“Before Pictures” by Melissa Schwab, Gold’s Gym Challenge Participant

So I picked up my before pictures yesterday….OH…MY…GOSH! It’s a good thing I was sitting down when I opened the envelope. Talk about a big ol’ dose of reality!! I OBVIOUSLY knew that I needed to lose weight, but seeing it in all its glory is a whole different ball game. The truth is that I would really like to throw the pictures away and pretend they never happened, but I have to face the reality to make a change. I need to use these pictures as motivation. I think I’ll put them on the bathroom mirror to remind me why I need to go to the gym and eat healthy each day. I’ll use it as a reminder of how my old habits got me to that point. The good news is that I’m done with the first week! The scale is moving in the right direction and I’m still alive! I’m already leaving that girl in the pictures behind. Here’s to 11 more weeks…

“New Class”- Blog from Melissa Schwab, Gold’s Gym Challenge Participant

So I tried a new class today. Apparently, I have two left feet. I learned that if it involves choreography and any kind of rhythm or bouncing, I’m not good at it. Thank goodness for friends because I had a friend with me and we enjoyed laughing with/at each other. There were many coordinated people out there who rocked the class. (A little shout out to Lisa, the instructor, who is awesome!)  Despite my uncoordinated attempt at the class, I still know I burned some calories and had fun. I find classes are a great for me when I need the extra push. Besides some of you might catch me in a class, and have the added entertainment of watching my attempt at coordination with my two left feet. See you there!
